Saturday, 29 April 2017

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board said it had so far registered 1.5 million candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination across the country.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Saturday at side line of activities marking the pre-JAMB mock examinations.

The JAMB mock examinations earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday May 8 had been postponed to ensure smooth conduct of the exam.

Oloyede said: “So far, it has even been better than our expectation, it was a mock, the intention was to test the technology and it proved to be perfect.

“I think from what we are seeing, we are more than ready for the main examination.

“At least 90 per cent of the examination centres have reported positively, there have been proper downloading and preparation; even after the exam we had uploaded responses of 80 per cent.

“We have done it to show that what works elsewhere across the world should work in Nigeria; we believe we can do it efficiently; we will continue to do our best.

“We have registered over 1.5million candidates in less than five weeks; we believe that the reality we have put in place is good enough.’’

Oloyede said that 633 centres were used to conduct the mock examination for 153, 000 candidates across the country.

In separate interviews, some of examination centre coordinators and candidates lauded JAMB for the mock initiative geared towards equipping the candidates to do better in the main exam.

Mr Abdul-Aziz Olasoyinka, Technical Research Officer of Digital Bridge Institute, commended JAMB for the mock examination.

He said it was apt in terms of preparation for future exams.

Olasoyinka said: “Mock is a good experience because it will help the candidates to adequately prepare for the forthcoming examination.

“It helps to evaluate how well the candidates have prepared and to improve themselves ahead of time.”

Mr Olajide Adisa, Director of Outstations at JAMB, said although there were 230 capacities at the Computer Based Test (CBT) centre, plans were on to upgrade to 250 them before the main exam.

“Even with that our specification is that at least we should have 10 per cent of same capacity as back-up in case of any breakdown.

“We have already put measures in place to test them in the course of the mock examination, they will be ready before the main examination,” Adisa said.

A candidate, Miss Hadiza Abdullahi, told NAN that the mock examination had improved her level of confidence ahead of the main exam.

She described the examination as encouraging, adding that she expects to sit for the main examination well-equipped.

Abdullahi, however appealed to the board to put measures in place to enable candidates wanting to register for future exam to do so with ease.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the mock examination held in three sessions, including the JAMB headquarter and CBT centre in Kogo community.

As the JAMB 2017 Registration gradually comes to an end on 5th May, it is important to be sure you have been duly registered, or if the registration by Accredited CBT centres is successful.

One way to be sure is when you receive an email from the JAMB portal to confirm your registration. Apart from the fact that emails could be deceptive, or else you are sure of the sender, sometimes emails fail to be delivered.

The best approach to ascertain a successful registration is to ensure that your details have been entered directly on the JAMB portal and they actually appear on the portal. Once you are able to see your actual registration data on the JAMB portal, then you can relax.

Note that the importance of this procedure is to ensure you have been registered, before the actual closing date of 5th May. If you can't confirm your registration, there is still time to make amends before the closing date. This procedure does not concern re-printing of exam slip for venue and date because that will most likely come after registrations.

Although re-printing of slipgs were earlier scheduled to start 25th April, it is most likely that this procedure will also be moved to start as from 8th May. This is only an assumption and we will notify you on this site if anything changes.

We will update this procedure when we have better details, or if we see a better approach in the comment section. We will therefore advise as follows;
2. Login with your email address and password.

3. Click on “My Usage” and wait for the page to reload.

4. Check the column that says “RESOURCES” to see if a role for “2017 Registration” or something close to that is written there.

5. You can also check to see if a JAMB Registration number has been assigned to you.

Jamb RUNZ UPDATE :ASUU under fire over calls for scrapping of JAMB

The Joint Action Coalition of Civil Society Organization for Transparency in Governance has condemned the recent attack on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), accusing the union of being allergic to reforms and innovations being introduced by the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede.

The coalition has also endorsed the on-going reforms and innovations introduced by the to ease of admission into the nation’s tertiary institutions, while also passing a vote of confidence on the leadership of the Board led by its Registrar, Professor Oloyede.

The groups said the innovations will deal with corruption in the educational sector and eradicate the problem of admission racketeering.

Addressing a press conference on yesterday in Abuja, Convener of the coalition, Mr. Sabo Odeh said the position by ASUU is wrong.

According to him, the latest trick is through the instrumentality of calling for the scrapping of the JAMB.

He said the reforms introduced by JAMB into admission process in Nigeria appears to have taken many members of ASUU engaged in admission racketeering out of business.

He said: “If ASUU is allowed to dictate how JAMB does it work, it is a matter of time before the lecturers set their sight on WAEC, Secondary and even primary schools.

“The clamour by ASUU that each university should be allowed to handle its own admission processes is an open call to empower these admission syndicates operated by no other persons but ASUU members.

Heeding ASUU’s ill-conceived call would send us back to the problems that JAMB was set up to solve.

“In the years that preceded JAMB, it was common to see some candidates secure admission into as many as five universities which implies that four slots would we wasted as the student can only resume in one school while several other candidates are made to wait another year at home because these slots have been wasted.”

Odeh blamed ASSU for the decay in the education sector that the country is today grappling to remedy, saying the union has lost its moral compass and does not have the capacity to challenge the reforms being introduced by JAMB.

He accused the union of frustrating interventions that would re-establish Nigerian universities as centres of excellence where youths can pass through and favourably compete with their contemporaries from any other top flight institutions on earth.

He said: “ASUU, as it did in the 90s, is giving the impression that it is genuinely interested in the well being of would be undergraduates.

We took time to study the situation with a view to ascertaining if ASUU’s intervention in the way JAMB conducts its major or mock examination is altruistic as they make it appear.

“Sadly, all that can be surmised from ASUU’s interference in this process is that they have resumed their efforts to hijack the education sector for their own purposes. Note that we say education sector because they have gone beyond their remit as higher institution teachers to dabble into academic levels that are outside their jurisdiction.”
