Wayne Rooney has been dethroned this year in more ways than one, the Sunday Times rich list reveals.
The Manchester United captain has lost his place in the first team and is almost certain to leave the club this summer. The Red Devils brought in Zlatan Ibrahimovic last summer and the Swede settled in brilliantly.
The additional arrival of Henrikh Mkhitaryan to compliment the attack left Rooney competing for a place and ultimately it’s largely left him frozen out of the team for large parts of the campaign.
It hasn’t been all bad for Rooney. He became United’s all-time top goalscorer in December.
Rich List
Despite being on wages close to £300,000-a-week, Rooney has been knocked off the top of British football’s rich list.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s accumulated wealth added to his £220k pay packet and clever business and sponsorship deals puts him on top. He’s worth £110m (second only to Lewis Hamilton in British sport) while Rooney’s worth £93m.
Rooney would regain his place before long if he opted for a big money move to China.
Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola also feature in the top ten as does Gareth Bale.
